A MODEL FOR INTERPRETING AND INTERVENING ON CONTEMPORARY TERRITORIES
Fusion of cities and their planning models © Xavier Matilla.
The project of the contemporary territories, a renewed territorial project that encourages the al urban containment, the articulation of urban fragments, the adequacy of the different city shapes in a new system of organization, physical and functional, which meets a model of “territorial mosaic city.” That is, a morphological and environmental structure that promotes mutual adaptation and the coevolution of urban natural ecosystems, based on an articulated mosaic of urban pieces and the biophysics matrix of the territory environmentally balanced. This can be achieved describing and limiting the cities, creating well delimited borders between the urban and the rural, and promoting the values of proximity between the people needs and the urban devices that make easier the various services: work, leisure, health and culture. And it is necessary to reuse, to rehabilitate and to recycle the obsolete or infraused fabrics.
With renewed environmental urban planning criteria, that must preserve sine die the areas of extreme environmental quality, and favor the overlapping of uses and mixed spaces, it must articulate the edges. It is necessary to project and to manage properly the urban areas of transition, to manage the wealth in biodiversity of the pieces of great quality that are part of the existing mosaics in the territorial spaces of the regional scale, and to restore the quality of the margins in the perimeters and the metropolitan interstices.
Using the landscape as a tool of social mediation in the management of changes, since when we plan regional transformations, we realize that new landscapes are opened. The landscape project is thus a tool, a cultural mediation that makes easier the critical view about the abuse of the territory and the definition of criteria for new uses. To recycle the mistreated peripheral territories means to generate a factory of landscapes that, besides new forms and spaces, will let new ethical attitudes to flourish on behalf of the citizens who inhabit them. We all want a quality of life, and the landscape where we live is a decisive piece/element to attain it.
